Will Olympic 'staycation' discount work?

Holiday-makers are to be offered discounts on UK breaks in a major tourism drive aimed at cashing in on the Olympic year.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt is unveiling a "staycation" campaign that will see companies cut 20.12% off bills.

David Weston, chief executive of Bed and Breakfast Association and editor of Hospitality Today, welcomed the move, saying that huge events like the Olympics "aren't always positive for tourism" in the UK.

But as Lisa Minot, travel editor of The Sun, said recent research by Thomas Cook found that a week at an all exclusive resort in Spain was cheaper than a week in the UK, including travel.

This makes it a problem to promote the UK as a holiday destination - "people do feel the need to get some sunshine," she said.
