Over in Japan, Sharp has been hard at work developing the world’s thinnest optically image-stabilized smartphone camera, the company announced today. The RJ63YC100 is a 12.1-Megapixel, 1/3.2-inch shooter measuring a meager 11.0 x 11.0 x 5.47 millimeters. The module is backlit, with both optical image stabilization and 1080p video capture. While large-scale production won’t ramp up until January, Sharp is placing the new module in two new handsets for the Japanese market. Both the Aquos Phone SH–01D (being released tomorrow on NTT DoCoMo) and 102SH (some time after on Softbank) feature the same glasses-free 3D-capable 4.5-inch 720 x 1280 display, as well as Japanese mainstays one-seg TV tuning, infrared and water resistance, although neither will be LTE-compatible.
