The Seven Year Pen Will Last You Seven Years, As Long As You Don't End Up Losing It Before Then

We try to be environmentally conscious—as long as it doesn't require us to wear Birkenstocks and a serape—so we were really excited to learn about The Seven Year Pen. Manufactured in Switzerland for the eco-friendly American brand Seltzer, the Seven Year Pen is supposed to last as long as its name implies. Considering that each year an estimated one hundred million pens are discarded, the invention of one that holds enough ink to last that long benefits everyone in the world—except BIC's shareholders.

The pen's secret is that it contains a wider-than-average ink cartridge hidden inside its barrel. It looks and feels like a regular pen, but holds enough ink for the owner to write 1.7 meters a day for seven years. We're not sure how many meters a day we write, as we've never even measured it in inches, but we think that sounds impressive.

The Seven Year Pens are cute—they come in an array of bright colors like pink, orange and purple, and are embossed with fun designs like a mustache, heart or a question mark. We figure the biggest problem with splurging (the actually quite reasonable) $7.50 on The Seven Year Pen is that, like with any pen, there is always a strong risk of losing it. On the plus side, even if we were to lose it, at least we'll know that someone, somewhere out there, will end up writing up to 1.7 meters a day with it—which will keep a few more pens from finding their way into the world's landfills.
