Weekend Excitement, and Not Just Fireworks: A Plane Lands on I-280
This weekend an airplane made an emergency landing on Interstate 280, one of the main thoroughfares in Silicon Valley, hitting a moving car on its way down but amazingly causing no injuries.
The pilot of a 1975 Cessna reportedly radioed a Mayday distress signal on Sunday evening, after a newly replaced engine failed shortly after taking off from the nearby San Carlos airport.
What apparently happened is that while gliding down without power at a speed of about 80 miles per hour, the plane clipped and shattered the back window of a Mercedes heading northbound near Farm Hill Boulevard, then landed on the road in front of the still-moving car.
Here’s a video taken from a car on the freeway shortly after the incident.
