Following in the footsteps of a recent Command & Conquer remake, Russian developer Aleksander Guryanov has created a full HTML5/JavaScript port of the 1992 title Dune II, allowing gamers to enjoy classic real-time strategy (RTS) gameplay in most modern browsers. The implementation is based on the work of the OpenDune project, an effort to create a fully open source version of the seminal game, and is remarkably faithful to the original.

Dune II was first released for Microsoft's DOS

Based on Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune and David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation, Dune II was first released for Microsoft's DOS, before being ported to the Amiga, the Sega Genesis, and the early ARM-powered platform RISC OS. It allows gamers to play as one of three houses — Atreides, Harkonnen, or Ordos — and introduced many of the elements that have become standard in subsequent RTS titles.

While the JavaScript version performs best on a desktop browser, it seems to work on Chrome for Android with no major issues — trying to get past the initial cutscene on mobile Safari was, however, a painful experience. Head over to play-dune.com to test it out, or check out the source code on Guryanov's GitHub profile.
