CHICAGO — A 20-year-old Belmont Cragin man charged with abusing his 4-month-old son was held on $100,000 bond Monday, authorities said.

Manual Lopez, 20, of the 4900 block of West Oakdale Avenue, was charged with two felony accounts of aggravated battery to a child, police said.

The baby was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital early Saturday, where authorities noticed several injuries to the child's legs and called police, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Lopez tried stop his son's crying early Friday by pulling on his leg until he heard a "popping noise" in the baby's knee, the Tribune reported.

As the baby's crying became louder, Lopez allegedly twisted his son's ankle or foot with force until he heard another "popping noise," the paper reported.

Lopez told police he'd done this to his infant son to discipline him at least four times within the last month, according to reports.

Both parents of the baby are being investigated in the incident, said Illinois Department of Children and Family Services spokesman Jimmie Whitelow.

DCFS has never had contact with the family before, and the infant and a sibling are in the care of relatives, Whitelow said.
