David Axelrod Slashes Stache For Charity

By Samantha Abernethy in News on Dec 7, 2012 2:30PM

As promised, David Axelrod shaved off his 40-year-old mustache on Joe Scarborough's Morning Joe this morning. Before the shave, President Obama's top advisor said he felt "faint," and his wife said she's never seen him without his mustache.

"Can you imagine how much mustard that this mustache has absorbed in Chicago at Comiskey Park for the past 40 years," said host Joe Scarborough.

Axelrod shaved to fulfill a bet he made with Scarborough. Before the election, Axelrod said he'd shave off his mustache if Obama lost in Michigan, Pennsylvania or Minnesota. He won that bet, but after the election he put his stache on the line for a better cause. Axelrod said if he and Scarborough could raise $1 million for epilepsy research in a month, he'd go bare-lipped. Donors included George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Mark Cuban, Donald Trump and President Obama. Trump called in to the show post-shave to chat for some reason.

Co-host Mika Brzezinski started the shave with clippers, then let the professional take over and finish it off with a straight razor. "Let me just say, I was not going to let Joe Scarborough near my neck with a straight razor," Axelrod said.
