Random London Fact Of The Day

Jimi Hendrix makes a number of entries in the annals of London trivia. His most famous connection is now his former house on Brook Street, which neighbours the house of musical immigrant predecessor George Frideric Hadel. Hendrix was supposedly once refused entry to Kew Gardens for wearing what the ticket office described as "fancy dress". He's also one of the (many) people blamed for initiating London's parakeet infestation, having released a pair on Carnaby Street in the 1960s. His trademark setting-fire-to-guitar antic was first performed at the now-demolished Astoria, using lighter fluid bought from Seven Sisters Road. He died in London on 17 September 1970 at the  Samarkand Hotel, 22 Lansdowne Crescent, Notting Hill, of a suspected sleeping pill overdose.

Good Cause Of The Day
Please send ideas to matt@londonist.com

Today's appeal is from Joss Parkes Searchlight, a relatively new charity set up after the sad death of Joss Parkes in January 2011. The charity was formed to provide support for families of children suffering from brain tumours. The charity will shortly hold its first major event — an auction of artwork donated by 100 artists, including Rob Ryan, Julian Opie and Mr Brainwash. If you'd like to attend the auction, which takes place on 14 March at Blackall Studios, Leonard Street, Shoreditch, please follow the contact details on the charity's events page. Snap up some serious art, and help a good cause at the same time.

London Weather
Today's forecast is inexplicably, inefficiently and no-doubt incorrectly written in BASIC. For a more human-rated version, see the BBC's weather report.
