Most Fabulous Santa Speedo Run Raises $7K for HIV/AIDS Charity

LAKEVIEW — Bare chests and red furry Santa caps filled Boystown bar Sidetrack after the Most Fabulous Santa Speedo Run Saturday.

Attendees took the recommendations for festive — and sexy — apparel to heart. Steve Osada, 35, and Don Hoover, 45 slinged black straps of leather wrapped in holiday lights across their chests. Osada ran in combat boots instead of sneakers to complete the leather holiday look.

"I can dance eight hours in these," he said.

The Santa Speedo run began in Boston, but was brought to Chicago several years ago. Some speedo-wearing runners ran a mile around Old Town to raise money for diabetes research, but organizers of the Most Fabulous Santa Speedo Run geared a North Side event toward LGBT runners and charities.

Event organizers and partners Karl Stonholtz and Jeff Colgan sported red speedos that said "Boystown" across the butt next to a jolly cartoon Santa. Stonholtz and Colgan announced that they'd raised $7,100 at the event for Vital Bridges, an HIV/AIDS charity — twice as much as last year's inaugural run.

"We're so excited," Colgan said. "It exceeded expectations."
