TomTom HD Traffic 6.0 upgrade ready for consumers, hopes to guide them through LA traffic

Stuck in traffic? Get off your phone, then update your TomTom -- the company announced today that its latest traffic service update, HD Traffic 6.0 is ready to get you out of that traffic jam. The updated service sources real-time data anonymously collected from other TomTom users, and promises to identify 65 percent more road closures than its previous system. Culling data from the service, TomTom was even able to identify Los Angeles as the most congested city in North America -- though we'd hardly consider a call that obvious roadway clairvoyance. Version 6.0 Offers Improved Accuracy of Delay and Traffic Information Will Get Drivers to Their Destinations Faster

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TomTom today announces the availability of TomTom HD Traffic, version 6.0 in the US. With the addition of over 76 million live data sources TomTom HD Traffic is able to report the location and length of traffic jams on highways five times more accurately than the previous version of TomTom HD Traffic.

TomTom uses live data shared by millions of drivers traveling across the entire road network each day. Using real-time data collected anonymously from TomTom's user community, TomTom is able to validate and broadcast traffic incidents that may not be captured of reported by other standard traffic sources. The latest update of TomTom HD Traffic offers drivers access to even more precise and detailed information about traffic jam locations, road work, and road closures in real time.

TomTom Research Finds Los Angeles Most Congested City in North America

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TomTom today announced the results of its latest Congestion Index, which measures traffic congestion in North American cities between July and September 2012. The third Congestion Index examines the congestion in 57 metropolitan areas with a population of more than 950,000, and found Los Angeles continued to be the most congested city in North America. On average, journey times in Los Angeles are 34% longer than when traffic in the city is flowing freely and 76% longer during evening rush hour. TomTom's Congestion Index is the world's most accurate barometer of congestion in urban areas. The Index is uniquely based on real travel time data captured by vehicles driving the entire road network. TomTom's traffic database contains more than six trillion data measurements and is growing by five billion measurements every day. The average congestion level for all the North American cities analyzed between July and September 2012 is 19%.

Other notable findings in this edition of the Congestion Index found that the top five most congested cities lie in the west with Los Angeles (1), Vancouver (2), San Francisco (3), Honolulu (4) and Seattle (4) topping the list.
