LITTLE VILLAGE — La Catedral Café and Resturant is officially the best restaurant in the neighborhood.

At least, according to the Little Village Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber awarded the café “best restaurant of the year” in December.

Inspired by a cathedral in Guadalajara, Mexico, the interior of the café features frescos on the ceiling and religious icons on the walls.

Previously, the restaurant, located at 2500 S. Christiana Ave., was called Catedral Café and was open for six years under owner Abraham Duenas’ watch. That café closed in September 2011 due to a lack of business.

Now, La Catedral Café and Resturant is celebrating its one-year anniversary under Ambrocio Gonzalez’s management.

Gonzalez, 26, said he is aware of the economy’s effect on the neighborhood and continues to keep prices low and offer daily deals.

“The neighborhood is passing a difficult time right now,” he said. “We're trying to do the best we can.”

The café features paninis, salads, crepes and more traditional Mexican food.

“It’s kind of a mix and you can’t find that food in a lot of the restaurants around here,” Gonzalez said. “We’re trying to show people how to eat healthy.”

He said customers appreciate the opportunity to have a side salad or fresh fruit instead of the typical rice and beans.

In addition to promoting a healthy diet, the café hosts zumba fitness classes in its space.

The café recently changed its hours and is now open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
