Heavy snow has fallen in Essex and police said on Sunday that conditions were 'miserable'

A man has died and a second person was trapped when a vehicle crashed in snowy conditions on the A12 in Essex.

Police said only one vehicle was involved in the incident which happened on the northbound carriageway near junction 29 by Kelvedon at 19:10 GMT.

Two people were in the car at the time and it took firefighters almost two hours to free the second passenger, Essex Fire and Rescue said.

Police had earlier described conditions on the road as "pretty miserable".

The incident follows an earlier crash on the southbound stretch when another vehicle blocked the carriageway for several hours.

The road was reopened later after the vehicle was recovered.

More heavy snow is forecast by the Met Office into Monday morning.

Essex Police has been warning motorists to ensure their vehicles were ready for the poor driving conditions and consider taking a blanket and shovel for long journeys.
