Sound:check is a night of live music for charity, where artists perform in a manner that best suits the venue, regardless of their usual set up. For the debut event on Saturday 2 March, four acts will play St John's Church, Hackney, completely un-plugged. Artists Hejira, Eska, Onetaste Choir and Mara Carlyle will play alongside a small string section and the church organ. All the profits go to ChildHope, an international children's charity supporting street and working children. Tickets are £10 in advance, £20 VIP.

"The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about," observed Oscar Wilde. He's wrong. So wrong. Much worse is having to endure the same monotonous, unexceptional weather for days upon end. "If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face forever," suggested George Orwell. He's myopic. So myopic. The future is an endless expanse of leaden cloud and oppressive yet unchanging temperatures, with the only excitement coming from ocasional icy rain. Just look at that five-day forecast. Rubbish. We deserve better than this.
