If you're heading out on the highways for the holidays, this is a great time to fill your tanks with gasoline in the Chicago area. The Sun-Times reports gas prices have fallen by 95 cents since September and are at their lowest levels in two years.

The average price for a gallon of gasoline in Illinois is at $3.25, its lowest average since February 2011. The Sun-Times reports a Marathon gas station on the Southwest Side was selling regular unleaded for $3.22. A look at chicagogasprices.com shows the cheapest price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Chicago is $3.34.

Although the prices are lower than they've been in recent memory, Chicago's gas prices are still higher than the national average and are expected to go back up slightly come Christmas Day. AAA spokesman Michael Green said this is a classic case of supply and demand.

“The demand being down is the biggest factor of all in Chicago because fewer people are driving in the winter months, and that is resulting in gas prices dropping,” Green said.
