New Cross pursuit crash: Man in court over girl's death

A man has appeared in court over the death of a 13-year-old girl in a crash involving a vehicle which was being pursued by police.

The teenager was in another car with her family when the crash happened on Sunday in New Cross, south-east London.

Devon Newell, 32, of Peckham, south-east London, appeared by videolink at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court.

He has been charged with offences including causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission said it will investigate the chase and accident.

Mr Newell was remanded in custody to appear at Woolwich Crown Court on 15 January.

He has also been charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident and driving with no insurance and no licence.
