A teenage boy has died in hospital following a hit-and-run crash in Greater Manchester.

Sixteen-year-old Callum Hilton was struck by a car at about 18:30 GMT in Bury on Saturday.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said Callum was crossing Stand Lane in Radcliffe, near the Hawthorn Hotel, when he was hit by a silver Peugeot which did not stop.

The car was later found abandoned near Bury town centre.

Police have urged the driver of the car to come forward.

Stand Lane has regular 30mph speed limit warning signs.

'Family distraught'

A man who lives close to the scene and witnessed the aftermath said people tried to help the teenager, who had been with friends.

He said: "As I was coming back home, he was already on the floor and there were two people offering first aid.

"One was a neighbour, a nurse who lives further up the hill, and one was a guy who was driving past. It was heartbreaking to watch."

Det Insp Amber Waywell of GMP said: "Understandably, the family are absolutely distraught and both want and deserve answers as to what exactly happened last night.

"What I can say is that from our initial inquiries, it would appear this young boy was simply crossing the road when he collided with the silver Peugeot which did not stop at the scene.

"We later recovered this car and none of the occupants were present, so our main focus is now on finding all those who were on board."

She appealed to the driver to contact police: "A young boy has tragically lost his life and his family are devastated, so do the right thing and call us.

"I would also appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened, or perhaps saw this car being driven at high speed or even abandoned in the town centre to come forward."
