Two men suffered life-threatening injuries and four other people were seriously injured when a bus and car collided in West Yorkshire.

The single-decker bus and a blue VW Golf crashed on Doncaster Road, Wakefield, at about 14:10 GMT.

The driver of the bus was one of those seriously injured.

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) said the most seriously hurt people had been taken to the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) by air ambulance.

'Walking wounded'

The A638 Doncaster Road remains closed at Crofton, and is expected to remain so for some hours, said police.

Two air ambulances, five ambulances, three doctors and a rapid response unit and two patient transport vehicles for the "walking wounded" were sent to the scene of the crash, said the YAS.

A spokesman for Leeds General Infirmary confirmed that three adults had been flown to the hospital for treatment.

Three less seriously injured people were taken by ambulance to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, while the remaining wounded were taken to either Pinderfields or Pontefract General Infirmary, said the ambulance service.

Bus operator Arriva confirmed the vehicle involved in the incident was one of its fleet.

Nigel Featham, managing director for Arriva Yorkshire, said: "We can confirm that an Arriva bus and a car were involved in an incident today on Doncaster Road, Wakefield.

"The bus was operating on service 149. At this stage we believe several people have sustained injuries and the air ambulance attended the scene."

The company's website details the service as running between Wakefield bus station and Knottingley.

Anyone who saw the incident or has information is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police.
