TPB AFK, the documentary exploring the people behind notorious torrent site The Pirate Bay, now has a release date. The film will be made available for free download on February 8th at the same time as it gets a showing at the Berlinale, Berlin's international film festival. Director Simon Klose says it's the first time a movie will ever have been placed online at the same time as its Berlinale screening, and hopes that the unorthodox release plans will speak to the principles embodied by TPB AFK's subject matter.

"By sharing this film under a Creative Commons license, we hope to contribute to a serious debate about the social and economic benefits of sharing. We also hope to prove that sharing can be a realistic business model."

The project was part-funded over two years ago on Kickstarter, but production got held up by the Swedish Supreme Court's decision on the fate of The Pirate Bay's founders. Until the film finally gets released, you can watch the trailer below.
