A passerby was punched in the face while trying to stop a man allegedly dragging a woman by her hair following an argument in Surrey.

Police said a man and woman had a verbal argument at 03:15 GMT in Heriot Road, Chertsey, on Tuesday.

The man is alleged to have thrown the woman's phone on the ground before grabbing her by the hair and dragging her along the pavement.

The passerby who tried to intervene was then punched in the face.

Surrey Police have appealed for the man to come forward, and also two other men who sat with the woman.

Det Con Barrington Goffe, from Surrey Police, said: "We believe the three men who have assisted this woman may live or have been visiting friends or family in the local area."
