Train services in Essex have been delayed or cancelled as snow hit parts of the county.

Light snow showers hit north Essex, with the Colchester and Chelmsford areas among those affected.

Among those cancelled were trains between Liverpool Street in London and Southend and Clacton and trains from Harlow Town.

Greater Anglia trains said it intended to run all timetabled services on Saturday.

Greater Anglia trains between Norfolk and London were also subject to delays.

Essex Police called on motorists to ensure their vehicles were ready for poor driving conditions and consider taking a blanket and shovel for long journeys.

Ch Insp Justin Smith said people should allow extra time for journeys.

"Remember that the roads can be very icy and you need to drive cautiously, reducing your speed and allowing extra time to brake," he said.

Schools were largely unaffected across Essex, but several closed at lunchtime on Friday.
