Derailed train causes London rail delays

A derailed train has caused major problems for rail commuters arriving in London.

The problem, on services into Euston station, was caused by a derailed engineering train in the Bletchley area.

It was exacerbated by problems with overhead wires in Queen's Park, north-west London.

West Coast main line operator Virgin Rail had to cancel some services, as did the London Midland train company.

The Southern train company was unable to run services between Milton Keynes Central and Watford Junction.

All its services between Watford Junction and Milton Keynes were cancelled for most of the morning.

Virgin Trains cancelled the following trains for most of the morning:

•Three minutes past the hour London Euston to Birmingham New Street.

•20 minutes past the hour London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly.

•50 minutes past the hour Birmingham New Street to London Euston.

•15 minutes past the hour Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston.

London Midland only cancelled a handful of trains in the early morning.

Lines reopened shortly after 09:00 BST following safety checks by engineers.
