Briton killed as hurricane hits Bahamas

A British national has been killed in the Bahamas as a hurricane battered islands in the Caribbean.

The death happened on 25 October as Hurricane Sandy hit, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rainfall.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) spokesman said: "We are aware of the death of a British National in the Bahamas on 25 October.

It was one of 43 deaths in the Caribbean as fierce winds flooded roads and tore off trees.

The spokesman added: "We stand ready to provide consular assistance."

Hurricane Sandy has since spun away from the Bahamas, churning northward towards the US East Coast, where it threatens to join with winter weather fronts to create a superstorm.
