EDGEWATER — Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) sent an email to Edgewater and Uptown residents Saturday after two separate shootings occurred just blocks apart over the weekend.

The first incident occured Friday about 8:15 p.m. in the 5200 block of North Winthrop Avenue, police said. A 23-year-old man was walking down the street when a gunman approached and opened fire.

The victim was taken in "stable" condition to Swedish Covenant Hospital, according to police. He was shot in both of his legs.

Osterman's office said the shooting appeared to be "drug-related."

About an hour later, three people were shot in the 5000 block of North Winthrop Avenue, police said.

Aswell Selmon, 46, was killed in the incident. Authorities said Selmon was standing on the sidewalk about 9:30 p.m. when two males walked up and started shooting toward him and two other men. Neighbors said Selmon, who was outside of his building, was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"At this point, all we can say is that it doesn't appear that he was involved," said Lisa Kuklinski of Mercy Housing — the company that owns the apartment building where Selmon lived.

The fatal shooting happened one day after another gang-related shooting at West Wilson and North Malden avenues left a well-known Black P Stone gang member injured, police said.

Osterman's office said Friday's fatal shooting was gang related, that two people were in custody and guns were recovered.

Additional police units have been assigned to the area following Friday night's violence, Osterman's office said.
