Hospital and ambulance workers arrested over man's death

Five people questioned on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence after man died outside Walsall Manor hospital

Police have arrested four ambulance workers and a member of hospital staff on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence and misconduct in a public office after a man died outside an A&E department earlier this year.

Carl Cope, from Walsall, collapsed outside the emergency department of Walsall Manor hospital on 23 June. A postmortem examination revealed the 47-year-old died of a heart attack.

West Midlands police, the hospital and West Midlands ambulance service are investigating the circumstances of the death.

During the lpast week, four ambulance workers, aged 26, 34, 45 and 53, have been arrested in connection with the investigation and have since been bailed, the police said in a statement on Friday. A 44-year-old member of staff from the hospital was arrested early on Friday and was in custody helping with inquiries.
