A pedestrian has been killed near Buckingham Palace in central London.

The 22-year-old woman was struck by two cars at about 02:20 GMT on The Mall and pronounced dead soon after, the Metropolitan Police said.

The woman's family have been told. Police are awaiting formal identification.

The driver of one of the cars, a blue Mercedes e-Class, drove off but was traced to an address in Hendon, north London, and arrested, police said.

The 42-year-old man was held on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop, and has been bailed to a later date.

The driver of a black Mercedes e-Class, which hit the woman first, stopped at the scene.
