Sigma Designs' new EasyTV comes with Wireless Display

You'd be forgiven for not knowing Sigma Designs' name, but it makes reference designs for plenty of other familiar names. It's outing a reference design for a new wireless dongle that'll help you share your smartphone's display on your HDTV in seconds. Powered by Qualcomm's Atheros AR6203 with 802.11n WiFi, the company is hoping to gain Miracast certification for the unit later in the year. Assuming, of course, that you don't just pick up a TV with such fanciful technology built-in.

Sigma Designs Launches New EasyTVTM Dongle with Wireless Display at CES

Display Media Content From Any Compatible Mobile Source Through HDMI to TV

Las Vegas, NV - January 7, 2013 - Sigma Designs® (NASDAQ: SIGM), a leading provider of system-on- chip (SoC) solutions for home entertainment, connectivity and converging multimedia delivery, today announced that they will be launching the EasyTV Dongle reference design. EasyTV is an innovative, simple and affordable solution that provides an easy-to-use wireless link between mobile devices and HDMI TV sets.

Based on Sigma's power efficient SMP8674 chip and Qualcomm Atheros's AR6203 chip (802.11N technology), EasyTV enables users to access multimedia on their cell phone, tablet or laptop and share it on a large screen or projector. Consumers can share media content such as YouTube videos, movies, photos and cloud-based applications and services on a TV screen. Business users can share presentations and data visualization through a projector's HDMI port.

By plugging the small EasyTV Dongle into a television's HDMI input, consumers automatically have a direct connection between any media content from a mobile phone, tablet or PC and their TV screen. This simple peer-to-peer protocol allows mobile device users to share what was once personal content with a larger audience by using Wi-Fi® to have the source device talk to the display device. Sigma plans to seek Wi-Fi MiracastTM certification from Wi-Fi Alliance® for EasyTV.

"EasyTV is positioned for exponential growth by being able to work with an open networking technology," said Ken Lowe, Sigma Design's vice president of Strategy. "EasyTV is a full production- ready turn-key design. We are very excited about Sigma's leading position and are currently engaged with multiple OEMs to embed our technology in many future applications such as, DTVs, projectors, docking stations, set-top boxes, and media players."
