AT&T rolls out Android 4.1 update for Motorola Atrix HD

Roughly five months after its release, the Motorola Atrix HD has been given the green light by AT&T to receive Project Butter, aka Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The refresh will be available for download over WiFi and will offer the usual suite of new features that come as part of the Jelly Bean package, but it'll also add Quick Settings and a few other enhancements to the mix. The rollout is expected to begin today, though it hasn't shown up on our unit just yet. To keep a close eye on your device, head to the About Phone section of your settings menu; let us know if you get it and what you think.

Beginning today, AT&T customers who have a Motorola ATRIX HD will be able to update their phone to Android™ 4.1 (Jelly Bean). ATRIX HD is the fourth phone from AT&T to run Jelly Bean, joining the Samsung Galaxy Note® II, Samsung Galaxy® S III and HTC One™ X+.

Android 4.1 makes your phone easier to use and more powerful than ever. The many new features include Google Now, which generates real-time notifications on weather, traffic, nearby transit systems, local restaurants and places of interest, flight information, and live sports scores.

AT&T's "It Can Wait" movement focuses on educating the public – especially teens – on the dangers of texting and driving. The goal is simple: save lives and make texting and driving as unacceptable as drinking and driving. Devices like the Motorola ATRIX HD include features that make it safer to stay connected while driving, such as Drive Smart.

The Drive Smart action features the Enhanced Voice Search for a safer driving experience. The SMARTACTIONS Drive Rule will set the phone to auto-reply to calls and texts and enables hands-free conversations.

The updated notifications now group together updates from the same application, and also allows users to expand or collapse any notification. Customers will also be able to view the full text of an SMS message and the full photo of a MMS can be viewed in the notification window. Event notifications display more of the event description to let you quickly see relevant details without having to open the app.

Quick Settings is an easy way to get to your most often used settings with a swipe from the home screen. Simply swipe to the left and you can quickly turn on/off Wi-Fi or drop into the detailed settings. The new "filmstrip mode" in the photo gallery allows users to quickly view photos and delete from the gallery by swiping up or down. The improved camera focus gives users a signal indicating focus quality. Jelly Bean also lets users respond by text to missed calls with a single touch.

ATRIX HD customers can get the Android 4.1 update via Wi-Fi by going to Settings>About Phone>Software Updates on their phone.
