Tower Bridge in central London has reopened after the crossing was closed when a Peugeot van caught fire in the middle of the bridge.

London Fire Brigade said it was alerted that a vehicle was alight at 09:20 GMT and a crew from Dockhead fire station brought the blaze under control.

The bridge has been reopened to traffic, but motorists experienced long queues earlier.

Traffic is now reported to be easing in the area.

Elle Than, who saw the fire, said on Twitter: "Long delay coming north over Tower Bridge, the engine of a small van was blazing.

"The heat was intense as we drove past - didn't stop pedestrians taking photos!"

Police said it appeared that no-one had been inside the van when emergency services arrived.
