Harwich pedestrian's crash death prompts arrest

A driver has been arrested after a man was killed while crossing the road in an Essex town.

The 28-year-old was knocked down by a car near to The Royal pub on Main Road, Harwich, at 21:30 GMT on Saturday, police said. He later died in hospital.

A 22-year-old man from Hornchurch, east London, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He was released on bail.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.

The road was closed for five hours while an investigation was carried out.

The driver of the Renault Clio and a passenger were both unhurt.
