Glasgow police officer killed in shooting incident at station

Strathclyde police confirm officer killed but refuse to elaborate on whether it was an accident

An investigation has begun after a police officer died in a shooting at a police station in Sighthill, Glasgow, on Monday morning. It is understood no one else is being sought in connection with the incident, but it is unclear whether it was accidental.In a short statement, Strathclyde police said officers from neighbouring Lothian and Borders police would oversee the investigation.

"We can confirm there was an incident at Baird Street police office where a firearm was discharged. This resulted in the death of a serving Strathclyde police officer," the force said. "A full investigation into the circumstances is currently under way and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

Brian Docherty, chairman of Strathclyde Police Federation, said: "It is too early to speculate as to the circumstances surrounding the tragic death and our thoughts turn immediately to his family who have lost their loved one and colleagues who have lost a friend." The officer was later named as Constable Rod Gellatly, 41.

Assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins said: "It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that a serving Strathclyde police officer died today in an incident where a firearm was discharged at Baird Street police office." Severin Carrell
