Lindsay Sandiford and Julian Pounder face possible death penalty if found guilty

Two British citizens have gone on trial for allegedly trafficking cocaine in Indonesia's popular island resort of Bali. Both could face the death penalty if found guilty.

Lindsay Sandiford, 56, was arrested in May when customs officers at Bali's airport discovered 3.8kg (8.4lb) of cocaine worth $2.5m (£1.5m) stuffed into her luggage, and went before a court on Thursday.

Her alleged accomplice, 47-year-old Julian Anthony Pounder, went on trial separately at the same court on Thursday.

Sandiford, who was not accompanied by a lawyer, told the court she would challenge the indictment, arguing that it was not accurate.

Indonesia has very strict drug laws. More than 140 people are on death row for drug crimes, a third of them foreigners.
