Boy, 12, killed in Bradford hit-and-run crash

A 12-year-old boy died when he was hit by a motorist who was being pursued by police in Bradford.

Bilal Khizar was on a crossing near Asda on Rooley Lane when he was hit by the car at 19:00 BST on Saturday.

The crash happened as the car was driven off at speed after being stopped by police, who said the driver did not stop after hitting Bilal.

The car, a red Seat Ibiza, was later recovered in Wyke. Two people were arrested and are in custody.

Relatives and friends of the boy left flowers and bunting at the crossing on Sunday morning.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it had started an investigation into the actions of the officers, who stopped the car in a lay-by.

As the officers got out of their car to approach the vehicle, it was driven off, prompting the officers to get back into the patrol car and following the Seat, before losing sight of it. The crash happened "moments later".

An IPCC spokesman said it would examine the stopping of the Seat, the interaction between officers and the people in the car and the following attempted police pursuit.

Det Supt Mark Ridley, of West Yorkshire Police's homicide and major inquiry team, said: "This is a tragedy for the family and they are absolutely devastated. Specially trained officers are currently working with them."

Following the incident, the Seat driver was involved in another collision with two vehicles, on the Chain Bar roundabout for the M606.

Mr Ridley said: "I am appealing directly to anyone who saw the vehicle being driven or the incident to get in contact.

"I need the community to come forward and tell me what has happened and what they have seen to help bring justice to the family."

Ifrah Satti, a friend who has known Bilal since nursery, said: "He's really nice, bubbly. He's a really good friend to have. He were like a brother to me."
