Three in court over Stuart Smith murder in Liverpool

Three men arrested at Anfield stadium during a Premier League game have appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in Liverpool.

The men, from London, were arrested at the Liverpool v Arsenal game on Sunday over the death of Stuart Smith, 33.

Mr Smith, also from London, died after an assault in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of Sunday.

The men were remanded in custody after confirming their details at Liverpool Magistrates' Court.

They are Joseph Walker, 27, of Pintail Way, Hayes, 39-year-old Mark McEwen of Angel Park Gardens, Brixton, and Michael Samuels, 39, from St James's Road, Croydon.

They are due to appear again at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday.

Mr Smith was found on Back Colquitt Street at about 02:45 BST, before dying at the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

A post-mortem examination of his body is expected to be carried out later.
