Google's Goggles app, which uses your camera to detect items and initiate a search, has been updated to support a wider range of phones. Prior to the latest update, Goggles only supported phones with autofocus cameras, effectively denying access to a wide range of entry-level devices.

With the additional support comes robust protection against potentially-dangerous websites. When you scan a QR code that has an URL embedded, Google will check that URL against its list of malicious websites before providing a small thumbnail of the page for your consideration. In another addition, when Goggles fails to find an exact match for a product that you've scanned it will now display products that look similar. The new app is available as a free download from the Google Play store, and should support any device with Android 2.2 or higher.
