Two sisters, aged eight and 11, who disappeared from home in Manchester after they went out to play in a park have been found safe and well, police have said.

Greater Manchester police said on Monday morning they were becoming increasingly concerned about Liana Boyd, 11, and her sister Teigan, who had not been seen since 8pm on Sunday, when they went out to play in Whitworth park.

Their mother later went to look for the girls. When she was unable to find them, she reported them missing to police.

A police search was launched for the girls, and shortly before midday police said they had been found safe and well. No other details were released.

Earlier, Chief Superintendent Rob Potts said the girls' family had been fraught with worry after they spent the night away from home.

Concerns were expressed as Whitworth park is surrounded by major roads, and the warm weather on Sunday night would have meant it was full of people.

Police have not said where the two girls spent the night. Some reports suggest they were found at a house in Moss Side, but these could not be confirmed. A police helicopter was circling over the area all morning and during the early hours.

The girls live with their parents just a few hundred yards from the entrance to the park.

It is understood they were playing near the park's gates, where they were visible to adults inside the house.

Neighbours in the road, which is mainly occupied by students, described them as happy little girls who loved to play. Lisa Murgatroyd, 23, who is reading Middle Eastern studies at Manchester University, said: "I saw them only yesterday playing across the road. They seem confident little girls, and always cheerful."

Another student, who gave her name only as Debbie, said: "They gave me a wave so I waved back." Nikolay Poyukov, 22, a business student at Salford University, said: "They often play together in the street quite happily.

"I didn't realise they were missing, but I could hear the police helicopter over the park all night. Their parents must have been very worried."
