Leicestershire fire crews tackle factory blazes

Fire crews in Leicester have tackled serious blazes at two factory units in the city.

In the first incident crews were called to a knitwear factory on Galby Street shortly after 12:00 BST and found the first two floors well alight.

Later, at about 19:30 BST, police closed several streets as thick smoke and ash confronted firefighters at the Corah's building in St John Street.

There are no reports of injuries, but the buildings were badly damaged.

At the first fire off Uppingham Road six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform from the Eastern and Central stations were called in.

Matthew Cane, station manager at Leicestershire Fire and Rescue , said: "One of the units in this multi-occupancy commercial building was alight - and the fire was rapidly spreading to neighbouring units and the roof.

"A lot of fabrics were stored in these units - so that weight has been an issue and some areas have collapsed and part of the roof had already collapsed when we arrived."

Firefighters were expected to remain at the scene damping down until Sunday morning.

At the second incident, residents and businesses in the area were advised to keep doors and windows closed.

Police closed St John Street, Watling Street, Friday Street, Canning Street, Yarmouth Street and Grafton Place. Pedestrian access to Burleys Way was also restricted.
