Back in 1984, William Gibson had just written Neuromancer, "phreaking" was still giving way to "hacking" in the popular lexicon, and 2600: The Hacker Quarterly published its first issue. The magazine was widely influential in the 1980s and 1990s, providing technical articles and news for the hacker subculture. Its publisher, "Emmanuel Goldstein," even earned the dubious honor of being referenced in the 1995 film Hackers. As other 'zines like Phrack have been discontinued, 2600 has kept going, and now the magazine has gone through its archives to offer the entire first year of its publication in a carefully converted DRM-free ebook. It's being sold for Nook or Kindle (or as a simple PDF) for $3.95 or $3.99 depending on where you go.
