AOL-owned homepage building service About.me just announced the launch of its first mobile app that brings profile creation and viewing to iPhone. The app lets new users build their own About.me profile, which is kind of like a business card personalized for the web. You can add social networks, choose backgrounds, and edit a biography that tells others who you are. While the app only lets you edit a couple facets of your current profile like headline and title, it does give you the ability to visit your favorite profiles, see "Who's Nearby" with an About.me profile, and view an optimized version of your profile that's nicer than the mobile web version.

While the "nearby" feature sounds like a gimmick, About.me Director of Product Ryan Freitas has a unique scenario in mind for when users will want to find each other. He told the New York Times, "You can imagine that you're at a conference and you search for others in the area. It's a really compelling and useful experience." The app is better late than never for About.me, which launched in December 2010.
