If you're a longtime Twitter user (or don't have a smartphone), you're definitely familiar with the social network's text message service that lets you send and read tweets over SMS. Twitter has just announced the service now officiallly supports two of the largest satellite telephone operators, Iridium and Thuraya. It's not that you couldn't tweet about your worldly exploits from one of these providers' phones before, it's just that Twitter has made the whole experience a bit easier thanks to short codes. Now you just need to add your satellite phone number to Twitter and then whenever you text the provided number (40404 for Iridium, 1888 for Thuraya) your status updates will be shared. Support for Thuraya has been around since December 15th of last year, but it's still good news for socially-minded world travelers and other explorers — we just hope it doesn't make it harder for Twitter to censor tweets on a country-by-country basis.
