The game is being remastered to 1080p by Hidden Path Entertainment, and will support leaderboards, achievements and matchmaking through Steamworks, according to the official Steam page (via GameSpot). Players will also be able to share content through Steam Workshop. All of the content form the original Age of Kings and its expansion will be included.

The pre-purchase will save you $2 off the $19.99 required after launch.

... although I'd rather it was $10 bucks. I'm cheap 'cause I'm poor (get a job sir!).

I didn't blame anyone for the loss of my legs. Some Chinaman took them from me in Korea.

      GODDAM YES!!!

This is the best RTS game ever to have been made, and I've been wishing and calling for a re-release for years. This is magnificent.

Oh shit, I was trying to find a way to buy AoE2 digitally just last week and was disappointed when I found out there wasn't one. I still have my retail boxed copy packed away somewhere but I assumed it wouldn't work on 64bit Win7 anyway, so this is good news. $20 though, seriously?

Not to be blasphemous, but what makes AOE2 better than AOE3? Really enjoyed 3.

They're pretty different -- AoE2 is the epitome of classic base building style in the vein of Warcraft 2 and Starcraft, focusing on producing lots of units with a fairly strict rock-paper-scissors system. AoE 3 tried to change that up a bit ... and tbqh I hated AoE 3. But my real love was Age of Mythology, which came in between the two. If they had an hd rerelease of that (with multiplayer, natch, since idk if the ESO network is even still up) I'd be all over it.

AoE3 was super pretty with physics and they altered some of the basic stuff (trying to change it up). It didn't do anything for me personally. AoE2 though? Hell yeah.

This and Sim City 2000 were like the staple of school-approved computer games back in the day, because they seemed vaguely educational.
