Kenya coach crash: Three British tourists injured

Three British holidaymakers were injured when the coach they were travelling in crashed in Kenya, tour operator First Choice has said.

The incident happened near the city of Mombasa at about 10:00 GMT on Saturday.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) spokesman said the injuries were not life-threatening. First Choice said the three were taken to hospital.

Some 15 tourists and one member of staff were said to be on board the coach, travelling to Mombasa airport.

A spokeswoman for First Choice said the firm was "working closely with our teams in [the] resort and the authorities" to find out what caused the incident.

She added: "We can confirm there were 15 passengers and one staff member on board; three passengers are being treated for injuries at a local hospital."

The company have established a support line for people concerned about friends or family that may have been affected.

Eyewitness Mark Bizley, who was travelling in a car behind the coach, told the BBC the wheels of the coach "lost their grip of the tarmac" and started to snake.

He said: "I could see the driver was really struggling to keep the vehicle straight. The right hand wheels went over the edge of the tarmac.

"As soon as the wheels hit the road, the bus rolled".

A spokesman for the FCO said: "Our team in Mombasa is providing consular assistance to the British nationals who have been affected.

"We are working very closely with the tour operator. Some British nationals remain in hospital receiving treatment for injuries, accompanied by their families.

"The remaining passengers will be leaving Kenya."

Kenyan emergency services have launched an investigation into what caused the coach to crash.
