Jason Ellis, 33, a married father with two children, was a K-9 officer and a seven-year veteran with the Bardstown police department when he was murdered Saturday night off of Bluegrass Parkway.
Investigators are still searching for clues at the scene but they do know that multiple shotguns were used and police have used the phrase 'ambush' to describe the moment Ellis left his car to pick up debris.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Norman Chaffins told the media that Officer Ellis 'never used his service weapon, it was holstered.'
Chaffins also urged anyone with knowledge of the shooting should come forward. 'Because it was premeditated, we believe someone was in that area before.'
Passing motorists discovered Ellis's body at approximately 2:00 am Saturday evening.
His car did not have operating video equipment which could have revealed who killed Ellis.
Police have not yet released what type of debris the officer was picking up or if they believe he was the intended target .
Prior to joining the police force Ellis was affiliated with the Cincinnati Reds minor league program.
Ellis continued to put his baseball skills to use as a Little League coach.
