Want a CPU with the most gigahertz horsepower going? Chipmaker AMD has unveiled the world's first 5GHz, the AMD FX-9590.

The FX-9590 is the latest addition to AMD's FX lineup and takes the clock speed to the 5GHz for the first time. For those looking for something a little more modest, AMD also announced the FX-9370, which is clocked at a mere 4.7GHz.

Both parts have eight processors cores based on AMD's Piledriver architecture, and both are from the "Black" edition which means that they are unlocked for ease of overclocking by enthusiasts. Both processors also feature AMD's Turbo Core 3.0 technology to dynamically optimize performance across the CPU cores to provide the best performance under the most intensive workloads.

"At E3 this week, AMD demonstrated why it is at the core of gaming," said Bernd Lienhard, corporate vice president and general manager, Client Products Division at AMD.

"The new FX 5GHz processor is an emphatic performance statement to the most demanding gamers seeking ultra-high resolution experiences including AMD Eyefinity technology. This is another proud innovation for AMD in delivering the world’s first commercially available 5GHz processor."

AMD has been the first to hit a number of historic processor milestones. It was the first to break the 1GHz barrier in May of 2000, and went on to produced the first Windows compatible 64-bit PC processor and the first native dual-core and quad-core processors. AMD the went on to launch the first APU along with the first x86 quad-core SoC.

Over the past few months, AMD has gone on to have a series of big wins. It has negotiated its silicon into all the major games consoles, including the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. It has also announced plans to support Android and Chrome OS in addition to Windows, hoping to break free of the stagnant PC market. And yesterday it was revealed by Apple that AMD will be supplying FirePro GPU for the new Mac Pro.

The FX-9590 and FX-9370 silicon will be available this summer. As yet, pricing has not been revealed.
