Fans of Café 28 received a shock Friday when the venerable family-owned restaurant at Irving Park and Ravenswood announced their Sunday Brunch service would be the last meals served as they were closing.

The Tribune's Phil Vettel spoke with Rick Miranda, who said a combination of factors led to a decline in business in recent months and money became so tight the restaurant even forfeited its liquor license, which is usually a backbreaker as the markup on liquor is a restaurant's largest moneymaker.

Miranda didn't completely close the door on Café 28's demise. He said a patron of the restaurant is working to connect the family with a financing program focused on minority business owners.
