Rescue crews were searching a stretch of coastline after a man was swept into the sea in gale-force winds.

The 41-year-old was reported to have been walking his dog in Blackpool with another man when both men ended up in the water shortly after midnight.

The second man was able to get to safety and raise the alarm.

A search was carried out overnight by RNLI and coastguard crews from Blackpool and Lytham St Annes, assisted by the Lancashire police helicopter and the search and rescue helicopter from RAF Valley on Anglesey.

A second search operation began just after first light on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, on the Devon and Cornwall border, a search was under way after a teenage boy jumped from a ferry into a river.

Jordan Cobb, 16, from Plymouth, was spotted jumping from the Torpoint ferry into the river Tamar on New Year's Eve, Devon and Cornwall police said.

Brixham coastguard received a mayday distress call from the ferry at 9.15pm reporting a man overboard near the ferry's slipway in Torpoint, Cornwall, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said.

Police, the coastguard and the RNLI conducted an extensive search for the teenager after he failed to reappear.

The search for the missing teenager resumed on Tuesday.
