Rumor: Star Wars 1313 on hold

Star Wars 1313 has reportedly been put on hold to focus LucasArts' attention on Episode VII.

14

When Disney acquired LucasArts, the company stated that "all projects are business as usual." That seemed to indicate Star Wars 1313 was still on-track, but sources state that the game has been put on hold.

Three separate sources reportedly told Kotaku that game development has been stalled since November. It had been slated for a release in late 2013, but the lapse in development time may push it into 2014. LucasArts, for its part, claims that the game is not canceled, but noted it the company is "working diligently to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that the new Star Wars movies present." This gels with the sources' claim that the gaming division's focus has been put on the upcoming Episode VII, rather than side-stories.

The sources went on to state that the game had originally been conceived in 2009, as a tie-in to the planned live-action television show. It had been called "Underworld" at the time, and was meant to be a much darker tone than usual for Star Wars. Further, it was planned as an open-world RPG with episodic downloadable content. The game was then reportedly scaled back and rewritten in 2010 once the show was shuttered. The story was apparently still being developed, with encouraging words from George Lucas himself, when it was shown at E3 2012.

We have contacted LucasArts for comment, and will update if we get a response.

That alone is why George Lucas should never be allowed to direct a Star Wars movie again. I'll honestly say Revenge of the Sith was pretty close to great as far as the prequels go up until that moment.

It's funny how new Star Wars movies are the worst thing to happen to Lucasarts. Episode 1 pretty much killed Lucasarts last time.

That it forced Lucasarts to start making shit games based off of the prequels instead of original properties. Where did I mention anything about how much the movie made?

Lucasarts, not Lucasfilm. Lucasarts is the game company.

      On Hold, not cancelled.

LucasArts won't talk about the status of 1313, other than to assure us, when we asked, that it's not cancelled. "LucasArts has been working diligently to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that the new Star Wars movies present," a company spokesperson told us, when we inquired about the status of the game. "Star Wars 1313 continues production."

      Also:

UPDATE: Here's one other bit of odd 1313 news for you..

Last week's episode of the animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, was set in... the same location as the game, level 1313 underworld on the planet Coruscant. See for yourself on the official StarWars.com slideshow for the episode. Specifically, slide... 13

      SW:1313 isn't going away.

I hope it survives. But how often has a game project been placed on hold and later released in comparison to on hold and subsequently cancelled?

Might as well be cancelled. Now they're focusing on Episode VII, then VIII, then IX and all those standalone films. Unless they decide to make a film or TV series about 1313 or KOTOR or whatever, those games are pretty much dead as there is no longer any room.

It might, Disney has no interest in developing these kinds of games internally, which is why they have closed all/most of their "AAA" developers in the last 5 years.

KOTOR was awesome and there were some good SW games in the past years, but I haven't really anticipated or been extremely excited about a SW game for a long, long time. This one actually looks very interesting. The Bounty Hunter angle could be a great approach for this to get away from the force stuff for a bit (which is fun but has been a bit overdone).

Anyone who has seen recent pictures of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, or Harrison Ford should realise one thing.... they should be making Knights of the Old Republic with scrummy young actors and actresses.

I would agree - I think people are digging the idea out of nostalgia instead of reality. I don't really want to see Luke get hip replacement surgery or Leia fall of the space wagon for the 15th time while she gets taken away for domestic abuse against Han.

This was going to be Lucasrts best SW game since Yoda Stories and Bombad Racing. Too bad.
