Yahoo shuts down another handful of products

Yahoo is once again taking out the trash.

Yahoo, Tales from the Crypt

Yahoo is once again taking out the trash.

By that I mean it’s decided to shut down a slew of products that aren’t really worth the effort to keep them running. The move is part of new CEO Marissa Mayer’s strategy to get Yahoo more focused on what it does best. It’s also not the first round of product shutdowns that the company has done since Mayer took the reins — and probably not the last either.

The soon-to-be shuttered products include Yahoo’s BlackBerry app, Yahoo Clues, Yahoo Avatars, Yahoo App Search, Yahoo Sports IQ, Yahoo Updates API, and the Yahoo Message Boards website.

“Ultimately, we’re making these changes in an effort to sharpen our focus,” Yahoo EVP of platform Jay Rossiter said in a statement. “By continuing to hone in on our core products and experiences, we’ll be able to make our existing products the very best they can be.”

VentureBeat actually called some of the product closures nearly a year ago with former CEO Scott Thompson briefly assumed control of the company. At the time, we said Yahoo should also shut down things like IntoNow and Yahoo Answers — two products that the company has actually stated have a bright future.
