Hundreds bid for Surrey's London 2012 souvenirs

More than 300 people have bid for flags, banners and bunting used during the London 2012 cycle events in Surrey.

Surrey County Council asked people to write 100 words saying why they should have a souvenir, to win the items.

The council said 320 entries were received and bidders would find out if they had won by the end of February.

Bradley Wiggins won gold in the men's time trial event which passed through Elmbridge and several Surrey towns before ending at Hampton Court.

The cycle road race on the opening weekend of the Olympics in July took cyclists from the Mall, through west London to Surrey and back again, and included a 9.6-mile (15.5km) circuit around Box Hill.

Lizzie Armitstead won Britain's first medal of the 2012 Olympics, taking silver in the women's road race on day two.

Councillor Helyn Clack, who is judging the entries, said Surrey became an Olympic arena for "three amazing days of sport" and plenty of sports clubs, community groups and residents would want to keep the memorabilia.
