Canadian firm Maya-Systems recently announced that it sold 18 user interface patents to Apple. The patents are related to innovative axis-based user interface technology where documents and other files can be grouped automatically into timelines based on tags or other attributes and which are accessible through the cloud.
Mathieu Audet, founder of Maya-Systems and patent agent, said:
“We dealt with a significant number of sophisticated buyers. We are pleased to have secured the transaction with Apple. Our patents have been analyzed thoroughly by many potential buyers. We are confident that they are strong assets.”
A key product of Maya-Systems is their IamOrganized platform, which is the first “all-in-one file manager, sharing platform, cloud storage and workflow management tool” to use the innovative axis-based user interface technology.
It’s not really clear what aspect of Maya-Systems’ patents Apple is interested in working with, but Apple has been focusing on more cloud-based document storage and sharing, like Photo Stream and Documents in the cloud. Given Apple’s recent press releases about the success of iCloud, it seems like the company is taking cloud services, and iCloud, pretty seriously. It’s nice to see that the company is pushing forward with innovating in this area.
