CHICAGO — Three people were killed and at least 17 people were wounded in overnight shootings.

The shootings came after Tuesday's warm and bloody afternoon hours, which prompted the outspoken Rev. Michael Pfleger to tweet: "9 people already shot in the city tonight and it's not even 10 pm."

Three men were shot about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday in a parking lot in the 1000 block of West Maxwell Street, across the street from the University of Illinois-Chicago Police Department headquarters, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

In the possibly gang-related incident, a male approached the three men on foot, fired and fled, Alfaro said. Tytrell Jackson, 19, was shot in the armpit and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital  at 11:13 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The two other men, 19 and 21, had thigh wounds and were listed as stable at Stroger.

Solomon Wyatt, 14, heard gunshots and looked out a second-story apartment window overlooking the intersection of Maxwell and Morgan streets.

"When I looked out, I saw two guys running away," Wyatt said. "I couldn't believe there was a shooting. This is a good neighborhood."

In North Lawndale, 23-year-old Pierre Howlett was found unresponsive in an alley in the 1900 block of South Drake Avenue with bullet wounds to his face and body about 1:20 a.m., police said. Howlett was of the of the 14300 block of Halsted Street in Harvey, according to the medical examiner's office.

In South Shore, 27-year-old Darrin Rodgers was shot in the chest in the 6800 block of South Cornell Avenue, steps from his mother's apartment. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m. Wednesday, according to the morgue.

In South Chicago at 9:10 p.m., police shot a man during a foot chase that began in the 8900 block of South Burley Avenue, according to the Police Department.

Officers had approached a group of males when they noticed "a chrome object" in the waistband of one of them, police said. The man ran after an officer got out of his vehicle, police said. The man was shot a block away on South Brandon Avenue and was sent to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

In an earlier shooting in the 2000 block of East 72nd Street in South Shore, three men were shot, and a neighbor said the shooting continued as police swarmed the area.

"They didn't care about the police at all, just 'pow, pow!'" he said.

Reacting to news of the violence overnight, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Wednesday afternoon said he is satisified with the reduction in homicides and shootings the city saw in February, March and April.

But the mayor added he continues to push for the "four P's" aimed at addressing city violence: "policing, parenting, prevention and penalties."

"There are days we're going to make progress. There are days we're not," Emanuel said, adding city officials need to focus on one question. "Are we getting our hands around [the problem]/"
